The English theatre Berlin has been producing theatre in English in Germany`s capial since 1990. Basically here in the same „Hinterhof“, same courtyard in Kreuzberg, ´cause they don´t just have traditional productions of Tennesse Williams, but they also offer up some pretty interesting installations.
We´re building English Theatre Berlin out in the direction of being an international performing arts centre. We´re have a four column artistic concept that consists of our in-house productions made in Berlin, our presenting series, where we function as curators and bringin´the most interesting theatre and performance from the English speaking world, our culural education department and then the expats or „Sparten-Programm“, where we will have extra curators in the field of comedy, music, cabaret, dance, Burlesque, all of these things and we´ll turn English Theatre Berlin into the home for this diverse, international, expatriate artist community in Berlin.
Do you think that an English Theatre is necessary then in the capital of Germany?
Absolutely. Given Berlin status as probably the most attractive city on the planet.
Even though the main language of performance will be English, that doesn´t mean that everyone necessarily has to be English native speaker or even be terribly fluent in English to get something out of it?!?
Exactly. Ehm, we decided to take the step in response to the fact that English has become the lingua franca of the 21. Century and the focus is really on English as a working language.
