So, here we are with Dj Mat Diaz in the Soda Club, a little bit before, let´s say prime-time here, so right in the middle of the afternoon, because it´s the only time, that it´s quiet enough to actually do some sort of interview. So I really was wanting to I guess ask first, how on earth you´ve got into being a Dj?
My life is music.
My first time was 1986, in a club named SophienClub. Okay. And with tapes, yeah, tapes, cassettes and I was a trendscout, okay, for BMG, okay. It´s okay, yeah, okay and, uh, then I played on the big parties, at the Loveparade, on the truck.
So, was it back in, when you were playing at SophienClub, was it back, when it was still East Germany?
Yeah. So, was it more restrictive in terms of choice of music? Yeah, we played 60 percent, ehm, GDR music and 40 other music from the world. But it always had to be 60 percent East German, uh, well, roughly 60 percent, „60 percent“.
Ehm, did it, was it weird for you to have your mom on East German Television, when you were growing up? Yep.
When and why did you decide to start teaching?
Seven years ago I was a teacher, a Dj teacher and I think, ehm, when I play guitar I have a teacher and why not for Djs?
Certificated Djs? Nee, die kriegen ´nen Kuss auf die Stirn und ´nen Dj-Namen verpasst.
I guess, the question is, how do you tell, what the audience is feeling and what they want to hear?
A good trendscout in the recordcompany must have a good feeling for a good song and a Dj also. When 80 percent are dancing I make a good job and, uh, yeah, dancin´, dancin´, alright Leute...!
